Compost Awareness Week
Leave the first response May 6, 2007 / Posted in RecyclingMay 6th to May 12th is Compost Awareness Week. The purpose of the awareness drive is “to encourage more people to recognise the benefits of home composting and the great results that can be achieved by using peat-free composts containing recycled materials in the garden”.
Composting is easy and accessible to everyone. It helps cut down on waste (ideal now councils are moving to bin collections on a fortnightly basis) and also generates something you can use in the garden – your very own free compost.
A lot of items can go in your compost bin including fruit and vegetable peelings, grass cuttings, egg shells, cardboard and newspaper – although it’s important to make sure you keep a balance.
Positioning your compost bin is also important – a sunny position can keep your bin warm and that helps the composting process. The bin should also be on the ground so that the worms and bugs can make their way up into your compost!
For help with composting then there’s plenty of details on getting started. You can even find out if it’s possible to get your hands on a low cost compost bin. Some councils have cheap bins for sale so it’s worth checking before going out and buying one.
Compost bins are available to buy online at Even Greener, Greenfingers, Ferndale Lodge and Dobies. You may also want to compare prices on Compost Bins.
