Go Green Not Roses Red This Valentine’s Day
Leave the first response February 6, 2009 / Posted in ShoppingRoses are Red, Violets are Blue, Why Not Go Green To Say I Love You? With the most romantic day of the year just around the corner sales of roses, chocolates, lingerie and anything remotely heart shaped will be soaring through the roof, but what if you’re keen to be green this Valentine’s Day? Well how about pushing the dozen red roses aside this year and choosing a personalised tree gift from Tree2mydoor.
Choose from a selection of home grown UK trees as a way to say I Love You. Crab Apple Tree, Hawthorn Tree, Wild Cherry Tree, Oak Tree, Lemon Tree, Orange Tree, Olive Tree or even a Hazel Truffle Tree Grove! Prices are from £24.50, much less than a dozen red roses and they’ll last a lot longer – an ongoing sign of your love for each other (awww, pass the bucket!).

Of course if your partner is of the “give me red roses” persuasion and anything less than red roses may result in a less than loving day of romance you may want to play things a bit safer. We quite like the Love in the Bag and Sunshine in a Bag seed gifts. These are only £9.99 or £10.99 and consist of red wildflower seed gift of red Field Poppies and Corn Cockle and Meadow Buttercup, Commons St Johns Wort, Ladies Bedstraw and Corn Marigolds respectfully.
As well as Tree2MyDoor there’s a wide range of eco and green Valentine gifts on offer at Ethical Superstore who have kindly put together a Valentine’s Day gift guide.

Stay Grounded – The New Video From Do The Green Thing
Leave the first response January 28, 2009 / Posted in VideosThe people over at Do The Green Thing have come up with yet another inspiring and thought provoking video and this time it’s about planes and CO2. They filmed planes as they left vapour trails around the Heathrow Airport area and then put the footage together to create a short film showing the vapour trails as scars. The idea is to demonstrate the constant damage this mode of transport is doing to the planet.
The piece is brilliantly put together and is accompanied by a simple but distinctive soundtrack. According to the blurb it was created using the Brian Eno iPhone application Bloom.
There’s very little information included in the film, except to tell you that in the time it takes you to watch 60 seconds of footage over 10,000 planes have contributed to noise and CO2 pollution, so it’s not preachy in anyway – just thought provoking.
Heathrow remains firmly in the news, especially with the possibility that there will be the third runway and sixth terminal expansion. However, whilst pollution continues in the skies there are attempts to try and make the ground works a little more eco friendly.
According to Holiday Lettings new eco friendly pods to carry passengers to Terminal 5. The Ultra A pods emit no CO2 and should be an improvement on the existing shuttle bus service.
BuyEco – Reviewing Eco Products For You!
Leave the first response November 10, 2008 / Posted in Shopping, WebsitesOne of the problems surround going green or buying eco products is that quite often there’s an alternative “non-green” option that perhaps may be cheaper or have an established reputation. How do you know if your Ego Electric Scooter for example is worth investing in? Of course there’s the “feel good factor” of buying environmentally friendly products, but where can you find out about how good they are?
Occasionally on Fight Climate Change we highlight products we like the look of, but brand new site Buy Eco offers to review eco friendly gadgets that are “aimed at making your house an eco friendly home”. The site only launched in November 2008 but already you can read about the Bat Torch and Moon Light.
The reviews are to the point and visitors are invited to leave their own comments too.
Going green or more eco-friendly isn’t going to go away (although we do wonder whether with recession it will become that big an issue for families and government in 2009) so sites like Buy Eco, as well as Fight Climate Change, can help guide you when shopping online.
Woodland Trust Aim To Create a New Native Forest Near St Albans
Leave the first response August 14, 2008 / Posted in NewsThe Woodland Trust have embarked on a new initiative! They’re hoping to create a new native forest in England, something which they say hasn’t been done before. It’s located near Sandridge just three miles north of St Albans in Hertfordshire and they’re looking for donations in order to get the project funded.
They need £8.5 million to create a flourishing new forest on this site for wildlife and people to freely enjoy. To make life tougher they need to raise the money by the 30th September as the purchase of the land needs to be completed by that time.

The Roberts SolarDab Radio is No Wind Up!
Leave the first response July 30, 2008 / Posted in Books, News, Politics, Products, Recycling, VideosFollowing on from the success of the wind up radio it makes sense that the evolution will be to solar power. Step forward then the Roberts SolarDAB Digital Radio. Available in five colours (black, red, green, pink and white) with a solar strip at the top, the radio retails at a reasonable £79.99.
The radio can be operated from either the mains or from batteries (complete with a built-in battery charger) and of course there’s the option to charge up via solar power. This is a much better option than a wind up radio and means you can sit outside and enjoy the British summer knowing that your radio is using nature’s very own energy (well provided the sun is shining for any length of time).
Apart from the solar power option the radio is pretty much a decent DAB radio. It comes with 10 radio station pre-sets and 1 watt total power output, however there’s no FM Tuner included – which isn’t much good if you’re out in the sticks hoping to chill out to some tunes only to discover there’s a poor DAB signal.
