CO2 Mug Joins The Global Warming Mug

Leave the first response August 17, 2009 / Posted in Shopping

Around 18 months ago online gadget stores launched the global warming mug which showed you how the earth would look if the ice caps melted. A follow up mug has now been launched this time concentrating that reveals the world’s worst CO2 emissions offenders. It’s the perfect gift idea for your fight climate change friend who constantly barracks you to do your bit to help reduce your own emissions.

CO2 Emissions Mug

It’s a heat sensitive mug that changes as you add hot tea, coffee, or other beverage of choice. At £6.99 it’s an expensive way to demonstrate the CO2 emissions of the world, especially when Breathing Earth does it so much better (and in real time).

It’s microwave safe and hopefully arrives on your doorstep from I Want One of Those in recycled packaging. IWOOT are the first UK gadget store to have the mug available, but expect others to follow suit in the build up to Christmas.

EDF Energy Launch Team Green Britain Olympics Initiative

Leave the first response June 17, 2009 / Posted in Campaigns

With the London Olympics only a couple of years away EDF Energy have come up with a new approach to encourage Britain’s to start thinking green. They’ve launched Team Green Britain, a website which they hope will show Britain leading the world in fighting climate change.

The message is very familiar, as it’s appeared on just about every site set up to encourage us to go green. We can fight climate change by becoming greener a bit at a time – but with Team Green Britain the message is accompanied with a rallying cry of “do something green for the team”!

As part of the Team Green Britain promotions July 10th is being designated at the first ever Green Britain Day. Paul Weller will kick things off at The Eden Project, who are a partner in the Team Green Britain project.

It’s another interesting initiative, accompanied by another “recycled” advert from EDF Energy (above). By using the Olympics, a bit of patriotism and the idea of the team working together at least the message is if we become greener we’re helping each other is a lot clearer.

The trouble is whether people really take any notice of these sites! Are they able to reach out to a wide audience and what impact will the message have? Despite Team Green Britain launching on 10th July they have, for example, no Twitter or Facebook presence – two of the biggest social media tools!

Still, there’s a few years for the site to run and it’ll be interesting to see whether this initiative crosses the finishing line in 2012 or whether it simply runs out of energy.

National Bike Week 13th- 21st June – Win a Center Parcs Break

Leave the first response May 13, 2009 / Posted in Books, News, Recycling, Videos

It’s National Bike Week in the UK from 13th to 21st of June and it’s the biggest nationwide cycling event of the year! It’s aim is to encourage the people who may not otherwise go anywhere near a bicycle to get on their bike, so to speak and give it a try!

Check out the video of the final event of the 2008 Bike week – the Great Notts Bike Ride, a 50 mile cycle which was the largest mass bike ride in the UK. Looks tiring! :o )

The main focus of the 2009 Bike Week is to encourage more families to take up cycling as a regular group activity which they can enjoy in their local area. As well as getting families together and exercising, cycling locally lets you to appreciate the community around you with the added benefit of not getting in the car and creating more pollution and congestion on the way to popular beauty spots.

There will be organised events happening up and down the country throughout Bike Week including commuter challenges, bike2Work/bike breakfasts, charity fundraising rides and free cycle safety checks. You can even set one up of your own! If you are looking for an event click here or some ideas on what you want to take part in visit the Ideas and Inspiration section of their website.

To celebrate this year’s Bike Week, the official website are giving you the chance to win a Center Parcs break, a Raleigh Bike and Thule bike carriers in three different competitions to encourage you to get on your bike. Click here to visit the competition page.

The Prince Charles & A Frog – Save the Forest Campaign

Leave the first response May 6, 2009 / Posted in Campaigns

Prince Charles has once again put his voice behind a new campaign to highlight the problems of deforestation. In the video The Prince of Wales tells us that climate change is a major threat to mankind and that we must act now to try and save The Rain Forest. According to the clip deforestation is taking place at the rate of one football pitch every 4 seconds.

To help highlight the issue a number of actors, including Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford and Robin Williams, Prince Harry and Prince William, Kermit the Frog and an animated frog are all voicing their support.

An official website – The Prince’s Rainforests Project explains the project in more detail. You can also register your details to receive more news and offer your support. To help spread the word you can also create your own frog video. Simply upload a photo and send it your friends!

For schools there’s also a special section which includes lesson plans and activities for you to download.

At a time when recession and swine fever are the main topics on the daily news, it’s good to see the issue of climate change isn’t being forgotten. Systematically destroying the very things that absorb CO2 at a time when we’re all supposedly looking for ways to reduce emissions seems totally insane.

Earth Day on Sky – Win a Wattson Energy Monitor

Leave the first response April 16, 2009 / Posted in Competitions

Earth Day is on 22nd April 2009 and to celebrate the event, now in it’s 39th year, Sky are running a series of programs. Amongst the highlights of the day will be Arctic Tale and Evan Almighty on Sky Movies along with climate change and nature programs on National Geographic and The History Channel.

The aim of Earth Day is to raise awareness of protecting the earth and our climate. There are organised events taking place all around the world, including the premiere of Disney’s new nature movie Earth, but you don’t need to attend an event to take part. It’s much simpler for anyone and everyone to get involved. For example, Sky are asking people to do little things including:

1. Walk, cycle or take public transport instead of driving
2. Make sure you recycle everything you can
3. Use less water – like turning the tap off when cleaning your teeth
4. Reduce your energy use – turn computers and lights off

These are all doable by everyone – and if you’re not already doing them, why not make Earth Day your starting day?

As well as their promotion of Earth Day, Sky are also running a competition and are giving you the chance to win a fabulous limited-edition designer Wattson energy monitor. All you have to do is send in your details via email before the end of June for the chance to win this eco gadget.
