Earth Hour 2009 promises to be the more spectacular, and potentially more newsworthy, than it’s predecessors as lights go off on National landmarks and monuments around the world. Earth Hour, a global event organised by The WWF to highlight a united front on the need for climate change, takes place on 28th March 2009. Over 370 cities in 74 countries are expected to take part in the event.

Lights will go off at many iconic locations including “Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro, Table Mountain in Cape Town, Merlion in Singapore, Sydney Opera House, CN Tower in Toronto and Millennium Stadium in Cardiff” (Panda).

Visit the official website to find out more about Earth Hour and how you can take part. The website is a little bit disjointed – for example it’s almost impossible to work out which cities are involved in the event. However it’s worth a look and you can register your support, find out what others are doing and download a guide to running your own event. Earth Hour images and pictures can be downloaded from Flickr. This year you can follow the build up to Earth Hour on Twitter too.

At 8.30pm on 28th March why not switch off your lights for just one hour and take part in this global event?
