The Ego Eco Electric Street Scooter Now Available in The UK! The Ego Has Landed!

Eco Electric ScooterWith petrol prices continuing to rise commuters are going to be looking for alternatives! Perhaps the answer is The Ego Electric Street Scoota, now available in the UK exclusively at Firebox.

The Scoota comes from China where 13 million of them have been sold in one year. It’s a 100% electric scooter that’s powered by a 1400 watt motor and offering a top speed of 30MPH.

You charge it up via your nearest mains socket and an 8 hour charge gives you around 40 miles of travel. The blurb at Firebox suggests that this is “eco-friendly” but I guess that depends on the green-ness of your electricity supply. Apparently a charge costs 8p and equates to 1000MPG!

The scooter can also be recharged at Park & Charge locations which offer secure parking for your bike (although at a cost).

So what’s the damage cost wise?

The basic Ego Electric Street Scoota, available in red, blue or silver, costs £999.95. You will need to register the vehicle, but Firebox can do all that for you for an extra £55! There’s no road tax to worry about and no congestion charges either.

In terms of cost and savings the Sky News clip above indicates that a petrol scooter (travelling 20 miles a day) costs £705, a small car costs £1012 whilst the Scoota will cost just £14.60 for a year of travel!

Will they take off in the UK?

The Scoota could satisfy those who want to be eco-cool and that may see them hit the streets, especially in London. The price is reasonable too and that should appeal to those interested in hitting the roads without paying for expensive petrol, congestion charges and public transport!

Ego Scooter beware! I was caught up in the hullabaloo about this little scooter and bought one. All I can say is be careful and prepare to have your patience tested. The whole purchase and registration process is very badly thought out, the bike is a little bit Fisher Price, as is the service. When I first bought the bike I got an automated email confirmation.. That’s it. Nothing else telling you what to do. I followed the details on the webpage and set about sorting out insurance and sending my drivers details to the company to get it registered. Would have been nice to have had a little “what happens next..” email with all the steps outlined clearly instead of having to call Firebox and trawl their website for info. Then 3 weeks later the bike arrives. No paperwork, no manual, no maintenance instructions. just the bike. Oh and most importantly NO REGISTRATION. They send you the bike and you have to KEEP IT FOR A WEEK BEFORE YOU CAN RIDE IT! Yes, the returns policy allows you 7 days to return it, but you cant ride it in this period as its not registered. So basically you have to look at it on the road or garage for a week and decide if you want it. Then a week later you get your registration and you can ride it. However, by the time you get to ride it - you can no longer return it. So beware of this. Also the anything on the bike that looks like metal…. its plastic. Drop this thing once and it’ll fall to pieces. I’d tell you what it was like to drive… but I have to look at it for another week before I get that honour. Rubbish
